UN slaps sanctions on Libya

By IANS/RIA Novosti,

New York: The UN Security Council Sunday adopted a resolution imposing sanctions on Libya.

The resolution introduces “targeted measures” against the current Libyan leaders.

The sanctions, designed to end violence in the north African country, include a total arms embargo, freeze of certain accounts and travel bans.

The draft resolution was put forward by France, Britain, Germany, and the US.

According to various estimates, 1,000 to 2,000 people have been killed since protests against the country’s longtime ruler Muammar Gaddafi began.

Gaddafi has refused to cede power despite repeated calls from the international community.
