WB Govt not implementing Muslim quota honestly

By Zaidul Haque, TwoCircles.net,

Kolkata: Notwithstanding the tall claims of the Left government of West Bengal and loud cry at public meeting of the CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, the state machinery is not implementing the 10% Muslim OBC quota when it comes to recruitment in government offices.

The Government of West Bengal declared last year the implementation of Muslim OBCs in Govt jobs in the state. The Left Front ruled West Bengal also claimed the state is giving priority to recruitment of Muslims. But a recent recruitment by state health department exposes the lack of required sincerity on the part of the government and its machinery to implement the quota. In the given case, the health department did not maintain the government roster of OBC people which was declared by Govt Gazette.

In January 2011, the State Department of Health invited applications for contractual engagement of Ayurvedic doctors for Specialty clinics. There were 36 posts — 9 reserved for SC, 2 for ST and 3 for OBC-A category and 3 for OBC-B category. As per notification of the Backward Class department of the West Bengal government, most of the people under the OBC-A category are Muslims. But they are not getting justice in recruitment.

After the applications were submitted, 190 candidates were called for Interview on 26th February, 2011 at Swastha Bhawan, Kolkata. Out of the 190 candidates, there were 19 people under the OBC-A category — 7 non-Muslims and 12 Muslims. But when the selected candidates were called for counseling on 28th February, 2011, among the successful 34 there was only one OBC Muslim while they should be at least 3 as per the declaration. However, two other Muslim candidates were selected under the General category.

So, now Muslims are doubtful about proper implementation of govt order regarding OBC quota, particularly for Muslims recruitment.
