Cairo: Egyptians will vote on proposed constitutional amendments in a national referendum March 19, the cabinet said Friday.
The amendments have been proposed on seven articles, as well as abolishing Article 179 that deals with anti-terrorism, the cabinet said on its official Facebook page.
The judicial committee, formed by the armed forces that runs the country, proposed it would reduce the presidential term, impose a two-term limit and expand the definition of who can run for the presidency.
Many activists and opposition figures, protesting in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, called for the formation of a committee to draft a new constitution, rather than just amend the current one.
