Islamabad : A pro-government tribesman was killed and seven others were wounded when Pakistani Taliban launched an overnight attack on their post in a tribal region, officials said Sunday.
The militants also kidnapped members of the peace committee in Mohmand tribal region, they said.
Peace committees of the pro-government tribesmen have been set up in Mohmand agency to help the security forces fight with the Taliban militants.
Taliban militants have carried out several deadly attacks on pro-government tribesmen in Mohmand agency bordering Afghanistan.
In December, a Taliban suicide bomber struck the office of local administrator in Mohmand Agency and killed nearly 60 people and injured 90 others.
Also in July 2010, over 50 people were killed in a similar attack in Mohmand agency.
An official said that armed Taliban militants attacked a post of the tribesmen at Manzari China area, some 40 kilometers west of Ghalanai, the center of Mohmand agency on Sunday.
They fired rockets and used automatic guns to target the post. One volunteer died and seven others were injured, the official said. He said that the post was also destroyed and the militants kidnapped two volunteers. The injured were transferred to the main hospital in Ghalani on Sunday.
Officials said that the tribal volunteers exchanged fire with the militants for three hours, but there was no report on Taliban casualties.
Taliban spokesman in the area, Sajjad Mohmand, said they attacked the tribesmen. He claimed killing of seven volunteers but the official confirmed only one death.
Pakistani forces have recently conducted a major offensive against the Taliban militants in Mohmand agency, which displaced thousands of people.
Officials say that the Pakistani militants also receive support from Afghan Taliban in Mohmand agency.
