PM’s wife to launch women’s health campaign

New Delhi : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s wife Gursharan Kaur will launch a nation-wide programme on International Women’s Day Tuesday for women’s health empowerment, officials said.

The scheme is supported by the department of science and technology, officials from Vigyan Prasar said here Monday.

“The week-long programme commencing Tuesday aims to reach out to the undernourished women to educate them about the scientific part of food and nutrition that women need,” said Kinkini Dasgupta Misra, scientist and head of gender division at Vigyan Prasar, an autonomous body under the department of science and technology.

The campaign, which focuses on rural and slums in urban areas, is to include simple approaches to healthy cooking and eating habits, she said.

Women scientists, doctors, and food and nutrition experts will participate in the campaign along with Anganwadi workers and representatives from the ministry of health and family welfare.
