US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Saturday that it was with “great reluctance” that she had accepted the resignation of Carlos Pascual.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon reportedly expressed his anger to US President Barack Obama over the leaked cables and said he would struggle to still confide in Pascual, who had criticized the Mexican government and infighting between its agencies.

Clinton said Pascual had resigned “based upon his personal desire to ensure the strong relationship between our two countries and to avert issues raised by President Calderon that could distract from the important business of advancing our bilateral interests”.
