Manila : A series of landslides triggered by torrential rains killed at least five people in Catanduanes province in eastern Philippines, the local television network GMA-News reported Sunday.
Catanduanes Governor Joseph C. Cua said several towns in the province were hit by landslides, which also blocked several roads.
The heavy rains, which started Saturday, were caused by an active low-pressure area in the Pacific, some 40 km north of Catanduanes, according to weather bureau reports.
The country is frequently hit by landslides due to typhoons and tropical storms.
