Deputy Superintendent of Police Deu Benaulikar was speaking to reporters late Monday after a police team nabbed a notorious thief, Michael Fernandes (23), who had escaped from police custody in Feburary.

Fernandes, who has more than two dozen criminal cases pending against him, most dealing with theft, was last year accused by the police of taking a supari (contract) to kill Naik and his sons Roy and Ritesh.

“There is no FIR against Michael regarding the supari to kill home minister’s son,” Benaulikar told reporters.

Michael, arrested for a theft last year, escaped from police custody by jumping out of a moving police van near Vasco, 30 km from here. He was nabbed late Monday evening in the remote region of Betul, in south Goa, along with an accomplice, Deepak Kerkar.

The 23-year-old Michael created ripples last year when he reportedly confessed to the police while in custody that he had been offered money to kill Naik and his sons Roy and Ritesh by Joeboy, a known local extortionist.
