Chennai : Tamil Nadu Monday paid tributes to former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi who was assassinated in Sriperumbudur near here on this day 16 years ago.
Governor Surjit Singh Barnala and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi paid floral tributes to the late Congress leader at the Raj Bhawan and at the secretariat.
Barnala and Karunanidhi also administered an anti-terrorism pledge to government employees.
Congress workers from Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry reached the memorial of the leader at Sriperumbudur, about 80 km south of Chennai, with the Rajiv Gandhi Jyoti.
The Rajiv Gandhi Jyoti, a torch, arrived at the leader's memorial in Sriperumbudur town, about 80 km south of Chennai, as Congressmen from Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry gathered at the site in the afternoon.
Tamil Nadu Congress president M. Krishnasswamy administered the anti-terrorism pledge to Congress workers in the state.
"Rajiv Gandhi had tirelessly worked for the uplift of the people and also for the nation's progress," he added.
The party also held a free medical camp at Sriperumbudur.
