Food inflation up; fruits, meat costlier

New Delhi : India’s food inflation nudged up after three successive weeks of decline to 8.74 percent for the week ended April 9 compared to 8.28 percent recorded in the previous week as fruits, meat and poultry products became costlier, official data showed Thursday.

Limited data on the wholesale price index released by the commerce and industry ministry also showed a rise in the index for primary articles, from 11.4 percent in the week before to 11.96 percent for the week under review.

The fuel index moved up slightly to 13.05 percent as against 12.97 percent in the previous week.

The following are the yearly rise and fall in prices of some main commodities that form the sub-index for food articles:

Onions: 8.28 percent

Vegetables: 1.53 percent

Fruits: 25.15 percent

Potatoes: 1.21 percent

Milk: 4.05 percent

Eggs, meat, fish: 14.96 percent

Cereals: 4.48 percent

Rice: 2.08 percent

Wheat: 1.31 percent
