Lal Masjid cleric indicted for killing Pakistani soldier

Islamabad : Maulana Abdul Aziz, a former chief cleric of the Lal Masjid here, and 20 others have been indicted by an anti-terrorism court for killing a Pakistani soldier in 2007, a media report said.

Special Judge Malik Mohammad Akram Awan indicted the Maulana, his wife and a daughter together with other accused, and asked the prosecution to present its witnesses May 3, the Dawn reported. All the accused pleaded not guilty.

In the case registered July 7, 2007, police said that about 1,000 armed men came out of the mosque and Maulana Aziz ordered them to attack the security forces. A shootout between the security personnel and the attackers led to the death of Mubarak Hussain, a Pakistani soldier.

The army had raided the complex in July 2007 to flush out Islamist militants holed up in the famous mosque.
