Bengal’s seat of power set to turn green

By IANS,

Kolkata : West Bengal’s seat of power, the Writers’ Buildings, initially wore a deserted look, but turned into a centre of celebration Friday as the news of a regime change filled the air.

In the morning the officials at the state secretariat were glued to the TV sets when the results of the West Bengal assembly polls were being aired live. The initial trend itself suggesting a turnaround of the popular mandate, the scene at the building changed dramatically.

Hoards of Trinamool Congress supporters among the state government employees trooped into the first floor corridor that houses the chief minister’s office.

Within no time, the only things visible were Trinamool flags and festoons. The shouts of “Maa Maati Manusher Jai” could be heard from afar as the Trinamool supporters rejoiced.

Despair was written large on the faces of the Left Front supporters while the personal assistants and secretaries of the ministers, apprehensive of their future under the new masters, were overheard talking of greener pastures.

The red building which for the past three decades continued to be red fort of the Left Front, is now gearing itself for the “green revolution” following the Trinamool’s party flag colour.

The building located on the northern shore of a water body locally called Lal Dighi in the Dalhousie area, was designed by Thomas Lyon in 1780.

It got its name for having served as the residence place for the junior writers of the British East India Company.
