Poll results prove women power, tweets Sushma Swaraj

New Delhi: Even as the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) failed to reach double figures in the five assembly state results, the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj, said Friday that it did prove the victory of “women power”.

“The results today have proved the women power,” Swaraj tweeted on her account on the social networking site Friday evening.

In West Bengal and Tamil Nadu two women leaders, Mamata Banerjee and J. Jayalalithaa caused major upsets, defeating the ruling parties.

It effectively means that India will soon have four chief ministers, including Delhi’s Sheila Dikshit and Uttar Pardesh’s Mayawati.

Besides, India also has a woman head of state, chief of the ruling alliance and leader of opposition.

But, the BJP has not done well, winning five seats in Assam, one in West Bengal and drawing blanks in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala.

“No. It has not been a good day,” Swaraj responded to questions via twitter.

“In Kerala, WB and TN, the election got polarised between two parties. The third force could not find a space,” she tweeted.
