Annu Raj shoots silver at World Cup, books Olympics berth

New Delhi : Pistol shooter Annu Raj Singh won the silver 10 metres air pistol event at the World Cup at Fort Benning, US, and became the fifth Indian shooter to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics.

According to information received here, Annu Raj shot an overall 486.6 (389 qualifying and 97.6 final) to finish second behind Ukraine’s Olena Kostevych, who won the gold with an overall 489.4 (389 qualifying and 110.4 final). Frenchwoamn Celine Goberville won the bronze with 486.3 (388 qualifying and 98.3 final).

Annu Raj and Kostevych were tied on 389 after the final round but a poor seventh shot, 8.1, in the final round cost the Indian the gold.

Among other Indians, Heena Sidhu was 17th with 382 while Sonia Rai finished a distant 82nd with 365.

Annu Raj joins rifle shooters Ronjan Sodhi, Gagan Narang, Hari Om Singh and Sanjeev Rajput, who have all won quota places for the London Olympics.
