“The longer the crisis continues, the worse the humanitarian situation will be,” said Shahda Athfar, the Unicef regional director in North Africa and the Middle East.

“The conflict in Libya prevented children from their basic rights like education and even entertainment, Unicef is working with its partners to provide safer places for all the Libyan children,” Athfar added in a statement.

Nearly $3 million of the needed amount will be allocated for education.

Since the crisis began in Libya, Unicef has delivered emergency surgical material, obstetric surgical and midwifery tools, hygiene kits and other items to hundreds of families living in camps on the border with neighbouring countries.

Libya has been witnessing mass unrest since Feb 14 against its leader Muammar Gaddafi’s 41-year-old rule.
