Kolkata: West Bengal Industry Minister Partha Chatterjee Tuesday visited the “disputed” Singur site and said he will submit a note to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee about the present condition of the land there.
“Apart from identifying the land, we are also preparing a note sheet about the condition of land right now. We will submit that note sheet to the chief minister,” Chatterjee told reporters after the visit.
A section of farmers protested against the “forceful” acquisition of land in Singur for former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s pet industrialisation project – a factory for Tata Motors’ small car Nano.
The Trinamool Congress gained considerable political advantage over the issue that later paved the way for Mamata Banerjee to the state secretariat.
She had demanded the return of 400 acres out of the 997.11 acres of acquired land to farmers who were unwilling to sell it. The agitation later forced the Tatas to shift the plant to Gujarat.
Banerjee’s first decision after assuming the chief minister’s office was to return the 400 acres of land to farmers.
It was also declared that the Singur pact will be made public, but the Trinamool Congress government later backed out by saying that it will take more time to bring the document in public domain to avoid legal hurdles.
