Srinagar : Two separatist guerrillas, including a commander of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terror outfit, were killed in a gunfight with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir Thursday, police said.
The gun battle took place in a forest area of Kupwara district in north Kashmir.
A senior police officer told IANS here: “Troops of Rashtriya Rifles and police surrounded a forest area in Handwara tehsil following specific information about the presence of a group of heavily armed militants there. The hiding militants were challenged to surrender, but they started firing at the surrounding troops triggering a gunfight.”
“Two militants, including a commander of the banned LeT outfit, have been killed in the gunfight. The slain LeT commander has been identified as Abu Jindal, a foreigner. The body of the other slain militant is being identified,” he said.
The officer said security forces had moved Wednesday evening towards the forest area and the guerrillas were challenged only after all exit routes were sealed.
