Kingston (Jamaica): The West Indies need another 195 runs to win the first Test after Rahul Dravid’s century helped India set a stiff target for the home team on an action-packed day three at Sabina Park here Wednesday.
India, resuming the day at 91 for three, were bowled out 252 in the second innings with Dravid’s fighting 112 saving the day for the visitors. Leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo led the West Indies’ fight back, taking four wickets along with captain Darren Sammy.
The Caribbean side, chasing 326, had lost three wickets for 131 at the end of day’s play with Daren Bravo and Shivnarine Chanderpaul batting at 30 and 24.
India lost debutant Virat Kohli (15) in the fourth over of the day with fast bowler Fidel Edwards getting the better of him for second time in a row.
Suresh Raina (27) provided good support to Dravid, who found himself in a familiar territory of batting around the team as wickets kept falling at regular intervals.
India were six down at the stroke of lunch and the wickets of Harbhajan Singh and Praveen Kumar after the break had them reeling at 183 for eight.
But Dravid stood like a wall on the way to scoring his 32nd Test ton and passed on his usual grit and determination to tail-ender Amit Mishra (28) as they both added valuable 56 runs for the ninth wicket and took the score past 250.
The West Indies began their chase in a blistering fashion with Adrian Barath (38) and Lendl Simmons (27) collecting 58 runs in the first ten overs. Praveen Kumar, who was India’s best bowler in the first innings, came to the team’s rescue by sending Barath back in the subsequent over.
Ishant Sharma struck twice shortly after that, removing Simmons and Sarwan with the West Indies struggling at 80 for three. But Bravo and Chanderpaul eased a lot of tension in the dressing room by sharing an unbeaten 50-run stand going into the close of play.
