Cairo : Relatives of those killed during Egypt’s 18-day protests that led to the ouster of Hosni Mubarak from power in February have now issued a statement demanding the former president and other ex-government officials stand trial.
At least 840 people were killed and more than 6,000 injured during the uprising, according to Amnesty International.
Relatives of the people killed during the protests said Mubarak was responsible for the death of their loved ones as he was the then head of the Supreme Police Council.
The statement also said former information minister Anas al-Fiqqi should be tried for inciting the killing of protesters during a so-called “camel battle” when security forces entered Cairo’s Tahrir Square on camels and charged at demonstrators.
It said former communications and information technology minister Tarek Kamel should be prosecuted for his role in cutting internet and phone service during the protests, while former health minister Hatem al-Gabaly has been accused of ordering ambulances to transfer ammunition to police instead of taking injured protesters to hospitals.
The families said the former officials’ trials should be broadcast on television.
Mubarak – along with his sons Alaa and Gamal – has been charged with “premeditated murder” of protesters.
The former president denies all charges. If found guilty, he could face the death penalty.
He is now at a hospital in the resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh for heart problems.
