Kolkata: Trinamool Congress ally Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) has termed as “sinister” the United Progressive Alliance government’s move to open the retail trade sector to foreign investors, saying it would turn crores of small traders into “street beggars”.
In a statement, SUCI(C) General Secretary Provash Ghosh said the UPA government was “serving the interests of the domestic and foreign corporate capital” and had decided to open the retail trade sector in India to foreign multinational companies.
“This sinister move of the government will drive out a few crores of small traders from their professions and turn them into street beggars,” Ghosh said.
“This move of the government will only help the foreign corporate capital to establish their monopoly control over Indian retail trade and reap huge profit,” he said.
Opposing the “heinous design”, he urged the small traders as also the country’s democratic minded people to organise mighty movements to “compel the central government” to withdraw the “anti-people” scheme.
The party was reacting to a government panel proposing opening up of multi-brand retail for up to 51 percent foreign direct investment.
