Kasargod police firing: enquiry commission dissolved; Rs 5 lakh to family of dead youth

By TCN News,

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government yesterday decided to dissolve the single-man enquiry commission probing the Kasargod police firing incident which killed one person. Compensation of Rs 5 lakhs will be paid to the family of Muhammed Shafeeq who was killed in the firing.

The decisions were taken reportedly as a CBI enquiry was on in the matter as per an order of the High Court. The government also decided to withdraw the writ petition filed by it against the High Court order. The decisions were taken in the cabinet meeting held yesterday.

The police firing took place in Kasargod on November 15, 2009. The district Muslim League committee had organised a public meeting welcoming Syed Hyderali Shihab Thangal who was elected as the new state president of the Muslim League following the death of Syed Muhammedali Shihab Thangal. Problems that arose at the programme venue led to police action and firing which killed Muslim Youth League member Muhammed Shafeeq. Shafeeq was reportedly killed by the bullet of the then Kasargod SP Ramdas Pothen. Another person named Askar was stabbed to death amidst the problems.

Retired District Judge MA Nisar was appointed by the last LDF government to probe into the incident. But the Muslim League did not cooperate with the commission. The party kept away from the sittings of the commission accusing it had political motives, and asked to withdraw the commission. MA Nisar had reportedly contributed his salary of a month to CPI (M) general secretary Pinarayi Vijayan towards the expenses of the ‘Lavlin Case’, in which the latter was accused. The contribution was made at a public function when he was serving as chairman of the commission probing into the workings of the State Waqf Baord. He had also reportedly contested as CPI (M) candidate in the Kannur municipal elections.

The family of even the dead persons Askar and Shafeeq did not attend the sitting of the commission held on June 22 in the Kasargod Collectorate Conference Hall. The Muslim League had already boycotted the sitting and demanded to change the commission. The next sitting of the commission was due on July 28.
