Over 1,600 families need rehabilitation in Posco site

New Delhi : Over 1,600 families who have been affected by the land acquisition by the South Korean steel major Posco in Orissa, need rehabilitation, parliament was told Thursday.

Minister of State of Tribal Affairs Mahadeo Singh Khandela informed the Rajya Sabha that 478 original families and 1,178 extended familes in eight villages need rehabilitation because of the Posco project in Orissa.

This information, the minister said, was received from the environment ministry.

The government signed an agreement with Posco in 2005 for the 12 million tonnes annum steel project near the port town of Paradip, about 120 km from Bhubaneshwar, the largest foreign investment in India.
