Panaji : Nearly three months after two activists were burnt to death in an attack on tribal rights agitation, the Goa government Monday announced the appointment of a retired high court judge to probe the incident.
Speaking to reporters after a cabinet meeting here, Chief Minister Digambar V. Kamat said that former Bombay High Court judge S.K. Shah would head the judicial enquiry.
“We were looking for a serving high court judge for the enquiry, but that was not possible. So retired Bombay High Court justice S.K. Shah was appointed,” he said.
Kamat said the judicial enquiry was mandated to probe the events which led to the death of two tribal youths Dilip Velip and Mangesh Gaonkar, both of whom were allegedly beaten up and burnt alive by a mob at Balli village, 40 km from Panaji, on May 25 this year.
Police have arrested one person in connection with the two deaths, but tribals’ organisations alleged some cabinet ministers were protecting the other persons suspected of the two mwn’s murder.
