Kolkata : Alleging that the Sajjan Jindal-promoted JSW Bengal violated rules by buying land above permissible limit, the West Bengal government Wednesday said it would vest 270 acres acquired by the company for its integrated steel project.
Quoting Section 14Y of the West Bengal Land Reforms Act, 1955, Land and Land Reforms secretary L.N. Meena said one cannot buy over 24 acres under a single owner.
“They bought land directly from the owners but they bought 294 acres. So we have decided to vest 270 acres, leaving out 24 acres. The 270 acres will be distributed among the original land owners,” Meena told mediapersons at the state secretariat here.
“We had a meeting with the JSW officials today. They have asked for 49 acres for railway connectivity. We have asked them to apply. If they do so, we will consider it,” Meena added.
In 2007, JSW Steel had inked a deal to construct a 10 million tonnes steel plant at an investment of Rs.350 billion (over $7 billion) at Salboni in West Midnapore district.
