Anganwadi workers exploited in various states: Minister

New Delhi : Complaints of exploitation of workers in anganwadis, mother and child care centres, had been received from various states, Minister of Women and Child Development Krishna Tirath said Friday.

In a reply to the Lok Sabha, Tirath said: “In 2011, five complaints regarding exploitation of Anganwadi workers and Anganwadi helpers have been received – one each from Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.”

“All these complaints have been forwarded to the concerned state government for appropriate action,” she added.

According to the ministry, the government approved 14 lakh anganwadi centres in the country to universalise the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS). Of these, 12.6 lakh are functional.

“As per our figures, 57.48 percent Anganwadi centres have drinking water facilities within the premises and 6.61 percent have toilet facilities,” Tirath said.
