New Delhi : Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Thursday inaugurated a plantation drive under which one lakh saplings will be grown at a sanctuary in south Delhi.
The Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary spreads across an area of a hundred hectares of degraded forest in the Southern Ridge, the northern terminal of Aravalli Hills, one of the oldest mountain systems of the world.
“The large scale plantation in the ridge would not only improve water regime and habitat of wildlife of the area but also play a significant role in mitigating the effects of climate change and global warming,” Dikshit said.
The Department of Forests will redevelop four existing water bodies in Asola and five in Bhatti area for providing the much needed water for sustenance of wildlife.
A total of 46 species of trees and bamboos have been selected for the plantation drive in the sanctuary.
