Raising the issue, Vetrivel said Karunanidhi has been illegally using the land behind his Gopalapuram residence here since 1967.

He said the land measuring around 780 sq.ft was allotted to Karunanidhi on his request by the Chennai Corporation after passing a resolution. The Chennai Corporation got Rs.3,250 as consideration for the land and stipulated that no permanent structures should be erected on the land.

Subsequently Karunanidhi gave back the land to Chennai Corporation and got back his money, but the land was still in his occupation, Vetrivel said.

He said Karunanidhi has put up a shed on the land which is being used by the security personnel.

Vetrivel also said that the DMK party headquarters has encroached upon the government land.

Protesting the speaker’s denial of permission to intervene, the DMK members walked out of the house.

In his reply, Local Administration Minister K.P. Munusamy said the government will take necessary action to retrieve the encroached land.
