Australia to hold 9/11 ceremony

Melbourne : Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard will join US Ambassador to the country Jeffrey Bleich in a ceremony in capital Canberra to mark the 10th anniversary of the Sep 11 terror attacks, an official said Thursday.

“We wish to remember the victims, volunteers, and first responders of September 2001 and all those who have served since,” Xinhua quoted a spokeswoman for the US embassy as saying.

The ceremony will feature a flag march of the Australian Federal Police and US Marine Corps representatives, the Australia Federal Police pipe and drums and a band of the Royal Military College near Canberra.

Ceremonies will also be held in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.

Nearly 3,000 people were killed Sep 11, 2001 when Al Qaeda terrorists hijacked four passenger planes and crashed them into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, and the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. One plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to retake control of the aircraft.
