Pakistan mulls five-day week to conserve electricity

Islamabad : Pakistan plans to have two weekly holidays and early closure of market to conserve electricity.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority is about to increase power tariff by about Rs.2 per unit.

Dawn reported that the government was getting ready to introduce a set of energy conservation measures, including two weekly holidays and early market closure.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani will Thursday take up recommendations of a special committee on energy crisis.

Sources said the ministry of water and power was keen for two weekly holidays on a permanent basis starting from the current month and market closure after evening.

The ministry has estimated that there would be the saving of 250MW on account of two weekly holidays and about 300MW on early market closure.
