On Board Air India One: With the security situation deteriorating in Libya, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday voiced his concern, saying there is “a chance of civil war” in the North African country.
“Despite what western forces have been saying, there is chance of a civil war in Libya and it could go the Somalia way,” Manmohan Singh said when asked about India’s reaction to the festering crisis in Libya.
He was speaking to reporters on board his special aircraft on his way home from New York, where he attended the UN General Assembly session.
Addressing the General Assembly last week, Manmohan Singh had strongly criticized the Western powers for using force to change regimes in countries like Libya and stressed that the absence of democracy and rule of law cannot be an excuse to violate the sovereignty and integrity of countries.
Ahead of his visit to New York, India had announced in the UN its support for Libya’s Transitional National Council.
