Child rights panel questions Uttar Pradesh on deaths

New Delhi : The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has questioned the Uttar Pradesh government on the death of nearly 400 people, a bulk of them children, due to viral disease Japanese encephalitis in the state.

The commission sought a reply from the state’s chief secretary, saying the matter amounted to violation of “children’s right to life, survival and development”, which needed to be protected.

Taking suo motu cognizance of news report, the commission Oct 8 said that 50,000 lives have been lost in the last three decades as the public health system has collapsed in the eastern parts of the state.
