Congress MP in Telangana sent to jail for blocking trains

Hyderabad : A parliament member of the Congress was Saturday sent to jail for participating in rail blockade in Telangana to press for separate statehood to the region.

This is the first case in which an MP and a leader from the ruling party has been arrested and jailed in the ongoing movement for separate Telangana state.

Ponnam Prabhakar, the member of the Lok Sabha from Karimnagar, was remanded in judicial custody for 14 days by a magistrate in Karimnagar. He was sent to the district jail.

Jeevan Reddy, a former state minister, was also remanded in judicial custody for two weeks.

Both Ponnam Prabhakar and Jeevan Reddy were arrested by police earlier in the day for participating in rail blockade in the district. They were booked under Railway Protection Act.

Prabhakar was also booked for escaping from a police station. He was later re-arrested.
