I am not in race for chief ministership: Steel minister Beni Prasad

By IANS,

Lucknow : Congress leader and union Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma here Friday claimed he would not be in the race for becoming chief minister of Uttar Pradesh if his party gets majority in the upcoming state assembly elections.

“I want to make it clear that I am not in any kind of race as far as the chief ministership of Uttar Pradesh is concerned. It must be known to all that unlike other parties, Congress doesn’t project any leader for the post of chief minister,” Verma told reporters on the sidelines of a function organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

“In our (Congress) party, we never debate on the post of chief mister prior to the polls… It’s the culture of our party that is committed to undertake issues related to the common man,” he added.

Accusing the Mayawati government of not co-operating with the central government over the development of Uttar Pradesh, Verma said: “The state government is not assisting us in setting up steel units at different places.”

“The steel ministry wants to establish the processing units in various districts of the state, including Gonda, Jhansi and Lalitpur, but due to the lackadaisical approach of the state government we are facing problems in executing the projects,” alleged Verma.
