Mumbai/New Delhi : As charges were framed against the accused in the 2G spectrum scam, opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari Saturday said the prime minister can not escape responsibility in the scam.
Gadkari said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has “a lot to explain”.
“It is not proper to blame only the alliance partners. The prime minister has a lot of questions to answer. Holding only former telecom minister A. Raja responsible won’t do. The PM cannot escape responsibility (in the 2G scam),” Gadkari said talking to journalists at a Diwali get-together in Mumbai.
Party spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi demanded a probe into the role of Home Minister P. Chidambaram in the scam. “We think any investigation in his role cannot be done fairly unless he (Chidambaram) resigns and that investigation should be monitored by the Supreme Court.”
BJP has been demanding a probe in the role of Chidambaram, who was finance minister in 2008 when the spectrum allocation was made.
“The BJP demands that the CBI investigate into the role of the then finance minister,” she said.
The BJP leader said the charges which were framed against Raja by court Saturday were equally applicable to Chidambaram.
“The particular charge can be equally applied on the then finance minister without whose explicit clearance allocation of 2G spectrum could not have been possible,” she said.
Commenting on the charges framed by the special court, the spokesperson expressed hope that “the trial happens speedily and justice is done”.
