New Delhi: The country is paying a heavy price for inadequate sanitation, with its impact on the economy estimated at Rs.2.44 trillion a year, parliament was informed Tuesday.
This amount is equivalent to 6.4 percent of the country’s GDP in 2006, Minister of State for Urban Development Saugata Roy said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.
“Sanitation is a state subject and it is the responsibility of the state governments to plan, implement and maintain the infrastructure,” he added.
He said the central government supports the states by providing funds for the implementation of city sanitation projects.
