Mumbai: Remedy for economic backwardness of Muslims in India, is usually searched for in one or other affirmative action programs of the government. But new beginnings are being made, taking advantage of enterprising nature of the community along with available but untapped resources.
For the first time, a group of business and community leaders will converge at TCN Annual Event & Award Ceremony on Saturday 17th Dec., 2011, to discuss ways to economically empower Muslims by going beyond government schemes and handouts. It will be organized in Mumbai at Hotel Taj President, Cuff Parade from 10 AM to 4 PM.
Topics to be discussed: Promoting Muslim entrepreneurship, Alleviating poverty through Islamic finance, Market for ethical investors, Islamic micro-finance in India, Challenges of financial inclusion, etc.
The day-long program will be presided over by Dr. Abusaleh Shariff who is the Chief Economist at National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER). Dr. Shariff was also the main force behind the Sachar Committee report and his presence at the program adds value to the agenda and vision of the event.
CEO of the National Stock Exchange, Mr. Anjani Sinha will speak on “Opportunities for Islamic Investors in Commodity Market,” Deputy CEO of BSE, Mr. Ashish Kumar Chauhan will speak on the financial inclusion of Muslims and the role of financial intermediaries.
“Indian Muslims are charting their own path for development without much help from the government and despite of all the challenges that they face. On the occasion, TCN Annual Awards 2011 will be presented. Young Gandhian activist Faisal Khan will receive TCN Person of the Year 2011 Award while Taqwaa Advisory and Shariah Investment Solutions Pvt. Ltd (TASIS) will get TCN Organization of the Year 2011 Award.

Faisal Khan is a grass root activist associated with the National Alliance for People’s Movement (NAPM). He has been working for communal harmony and social cause for last one decade. The award is in recognition of his initiative to revive “Khudai Khidmatgar” (Servants for God’s Creation).
TCN Organization of the Year 2011
The award to TASIS is in recognition of its stature as a credible and highly competent Shariah advisory institution. TASIS was the main force behind the launch of Shariah-compliant index in Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).
