“We have activated the administration to extend relief measures to the people. A sum of Rs.850 crore has been allocated for relief and restoration work,” Jayalalithaa said, according to a government statement.

Jayalalithaa left for Cuddalore, some 190 km from Chennai, by helicopter from the state capital and also made an aerial survey of the district.

Cyclone Thane crossed the Cuddalore coast Friday morning, packing a wind speed of 140 kmph and left a trail of death and destruction.

Around 50 people were killed in the state due to the cyclone.

The cyclone uprooted trees, electric poles plunging the entire district into darkness, and blew away tiled and thatched roofs.

Jayalalithaa gave Rs.200,000 each to the families of those killed in the cyclone.
