Chennai : The Indian National Congress Monday began beaming its first Tamil television channel, Mega TV.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi put the channel on air Saturday, at the AICC session in New Delhi.
Mega TV belongs to Congress leader K. V. Thangabalu, a press release said.
The new channel would be an entertainment-cum-news channel, the release said. Its first host Monday was controversial director Thangar Bacchan.
Another Congressman from Tamil Nadu, MLA Vasanthakumar, owner of one of Tamil Nadu’s biggest retail chains, Vasanth & Co, has announced that he too will launch a television channel soon.
“Vasanth TV will also be launched by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, and will be a Congress channel,” he said.
The two Congress channels hope to give competition to DMK’s Kalaignar TV belonging to the Raj TV group and to AIADMK’s Jaya TV.
The Pattali Makkal Katchi has its own channel, the Makkal TV.
Another political party, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK, formerly known as the Dalit Panthers of India), also has a supporting TV channel called Tamizhan TV.
The popularity of the Sun Group’s channels belonging to the Maran brothers has not, however, decreased despite increase in the number of Tamil TV channels.
