Raipur : Sunil Kumar, a 1979 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, Tuesday took charge as the chief secretary of the mineral rich but insurgency-hit Chhattisgarh.
Kumar is the seventh chief secretary of the state that came into existence in November 2000 after it was carved out of Madhya Pradesh.
He is scheduled to retire in February 2014, an official in the chief minister’s office said.
Kumar was earlier working as the state’s additional chief secretary.
He succeeds P. Joy Oommen, who still had a few months left in his tenure. However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regime decided to appoint Kumar.
Kumar has also served as secretary to Ajit Jogi, when he was chief minister of the Congress government which was voted out in the state’s maiden assembly polls in November 2003.
