New Delhi : Citing absence of effective laws to manage traffic, Delhi Police Saturday said the situation on city’s roads could get worse if penalties for driving offences were not raised and licence issuing process was not improved.
According to a message posted by Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Satyendra Garg on Traffic Police’s Facebook page, steps that could have improved the capital’s traffic situation have “not come through”.
“It has been more than two years for me in Traffic Police and things which could have real impact in improving traffic situation are not coming through,” posted Garg on the site which has close to a lakh followers.
The steps Garg mentioned included – “Increasing penalties for traffic rules violations, better system of issuing of driving licences, rigorous ‘fitness’ regimen for commercial vehicles, robust and effective public transport system taking (care of) about 90-95 percent of transport needs in city.”
He suggested “serious restrictions on private vehicles, effective parking management, digitisation of all violations and driving licences, effective last mile connectivity between Metro stations and destinations etc.”
Garg said that without all such important measures, the traffic condition in the capital will only become difficult with each passing day.
Replying to a comment by a follower who advocated the implementation of strict lane discipline, Garg said for that stiff penalties and CCTV cameras were a must.
“At this moment both are missing and we are working for getting the CCTV coverage. For effective improvement in traffic scenario institutional arrangements have to improve,” replied Garg.
