Bhopal: The Social Democratic Party of India, (SDPI), has vehemently criticised the melodrama wherein law enforcing agencies stealthily tried to pick up innocent Muslims from a building in the Jamia Nagar area in South-East in New Delhi in the name of illegal Bangladesh immigrants in the dead of night on Thursday last.
SDPI Delhi state president Mr. Abdul Rasheed Agwan in a statement demanded from the Union and Delhi governments to order a high level probe into the whole incident to unmask the forces behind such a move as the local police was also not taken into confidence before launching the raid. Merely suspending the six cops who conducted the raid is not enough, he said.
Mr. Agwan said that the incident is nothing but an attempt to terrorise the residents of the area bringing back alive the cruel memories of Batla House encounter of 2008 wherein two Muslim youth were gunned down brutally. It may be recalled that hardly a month after the encounter, police had attempted to pick a youth from Shaheen Bagh area and vigilant people gathered and the cops had to flee. Similarly, it is good to learn that people of the locality gathered up courage and challenged the raiding plain clothes police team from the Bangladeshi cell and foiled their ulterior motives.
He charged that the various official and unofficial cells of the Delhi Police have turned Jamia Nagar into a happy hunting ground, sometimes picking up people in the name of cracking an auto lifting case; at other times, rounding up poor workers from Bihar and Bengal accusing them of being illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. Students are also not spared and randomly called into the police station and asked to give their finger prints, which are fed into the police computer records.
Mr. Agwan lamented that instead of instilling confidence into the second largest majority of the country attempts are made at regular intervals by the law enforcing agencies to belittle Indian Muslims as if they are second class citizens of the country. This is contradictory to the overall development of the country as Muslims, which constitute more than 15 per cent population of India, cannot be treated in such shabby manner. Such disgusting incidents also tarnish the image of the country internationally, he added.
