New Delhi : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Friday issued notice to the Tamil Nadu police in the killing of five men in a gun-battle in Chennai Feb 22 after branding them as bank robbers.
The commission, which took cognizance of complaints based on media reports, has asked authorities (Director General of Police and others) to respond to its notice within eight weeks along with the magisterial enquiry report, post-mortem report and independent investigation report of the incident.
The District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police, Chennai have also been sent notices.
According to media reports, police surrounded a house where an alleged gang of robbers was suspected to be hiding, and asked them to surrender. However, the alleged robbers opened fire at police injuring two personnel. The five alleged robbers were killed in the gun battle that followed.
