2 Nigerians arrested in Ghaziabad for cheating trader

Ghaziabad : Police in Ghaziabad arrested two Nigerian nationals Saturday for duping a local trader of at least Rs.4.5 lakh in an internet lottery scam.

Police here said they initiated action after receiving a complaint from a trader that he had been cheated by some unidentified persons who told him he had won a huge sum through internet lottery.

Initially, they demanded a few thousand rupees, then increased the demand to lakhs of rupees and finally reached a figure of 550,000 British pounds (Rs.4.30 crore).

On a tip-off, the police nabbed the Nigerians from the railway crossing near GT Road. During sustained interrogation, they confessed their crime and revealed their identities as Namdi Navakez and Prince Benjamin.

The police recovered cash amounting to Rs.420,000 and 200 US dollars, two data cards, five mobile phones, two laptops, one Opel Corsa car and a bundle of counterfeit US dollars.

“We have booked them under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and of the IT Act,” said Rajesh Bharti, Circle Officer (CO) I of Ghaziabad police.
