Bob Carr named new Australian foreign minister

Sydney : Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has named Bob Carr as the country’s new foreign minister.

Carr, a former premier of New South Wales, is a prolific writer and served as leader of opposition from 1988 until his election as premier in March 1995.

He has authored “Thoughtlines” (2002), “What Australia Means to Me” (2003), and “My Reading Life” (2008). He has retained close ties with the ruling Labor party.

The new foreign minister will join the Australian Senate after being sworn in and confirmed by the governor general, Xinhua reported.
