Chennai : The demand of Tamil Nadu’s political parties that India support a US-backed resolution against Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) got stronger Monday with a picture surfacing of a bullet-ridden body of a boy said to be the 12-year-old son of slain LTTE chief V. Prabhakaran.
Speaking to reporters here, DMK president M.Karunanidhi said: “India should support the US backed resolution.”
Referring to the pictures of the bullet-ridden body of Balachandran, he said that a lot of torture has happened in Sri Lanka and the central government should fulfill the demand of Tamil Nadu’s political parties.
The UK based Channel 4 a television channel had screened the footage in Geneva and will be airing the same on its channel Wednesday.
Speaking to IANS, CPI state secretary D.Pandian said: “It had happened in 2009. It came to light then. Sri Lankan and Indian governments blacked it out. The video has come out again now.”
He said Indian government should support the US backed resolution if it believes in the country’s heritage of non-violence.
Referring to the pictures of the boy with bullet marks on his chest, MDMK spokesperson G.Nanmaran told IANS: “It will prompt countries to support the US resolution to take action against Sri Lanka for all the war crimes committed in 2009.”
Chief Minister and AIADMK chief J.Jayalalithaa had written twice to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urging him to support the US resolution at UNHRC.
The state assembly has passed a resolution calling the central government to bring in economic sanctions against Sri Lanka along with other countries and also take action against Sri Lankan officials who are found to have committed war crimes.
