In a letter to DMK president M. Karunanidhi dated March 12, 2012, a copy of which was released to the media here by DMK Tuesday, Manmohan Singh said: “With regard to the resolution in the UN Human Rights Council, we are engaged with all parties in an effort to achieve an outcome that is forward-looking and that ensures that rather than deepening confrontation and mistrust between the concerned parties, a way forward is found on issues related to accountability and reconciliation.”

The prime minister’s letter is in response to Karunanidhi’s letter of March 9, urging him to support the US backed resolution.

“Our objective, as always remains, the achievement of a future for the Tamil community in Sri Lanka that is marked by equality, dignity, justice and self-respect,” the prime minister said.

Manmohan Singh said that India has emphasized to Sri Lanka the importance of genuine process of reconciliation to address grievances of the Tamils there and has welcomed the repot of the Sri Lankan Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC).

According to the prime minister, India believes that the implementation of the recommendations of LLRC would contribute to the reconciliation process.

He said India emphasizes on the need for an independent and credible mechanism to investigate allegations of human rights violations in a time bound manner.

Underscoring the importance that India attaches to the well being of Tamils in the island nation, the prime minister said India has been consistently telling Sri Lanka of the need for a political settlement that would take into account the legitimate interests of Tamil community.

He said a modicum of normalcy is returning in Tamil areas in Sri Lanka due to the technical, economic and financial support given by India.
