New Delhi: It took the Home Ministry of India around two weeks to get up and take notice of the mysterious detention/arrest of Darbhanga engineer Fasih Mahmood from Saudi Arabia. According to Times Of India, the ministry has sought report from the external affairs ministry regarding the case.

Mahmood was picked from his home in Al Jubail in Saudi on 13th May reportedly on the request of Indian authorities for his alleged involvement in terror cases. But officially neither in India nor in Saudi Arabia his detention or arrest or charges were announced. In last 10 days a section of media regularly reported the issue and his family approached both home and foreign ministries of the country and various states police but none responded.

According to TOI news report published Sunday (27th May 2012), the home ministry has asked the external affairs ministry to find out whether Fasih is still being questioned by Saudi authorities.

The report further says that the sources in the home ministry have confirmed he has not been handed over to Indian security agencies.

“We can only comment on the situation once we receive the status report, as we are not aware of the recent developments regarding Fasih. It can, however, be confirmed that he has not yet been handed over to the Indian security agencies,” said the TOI report quoting home ministry officials.

Mahmood comes from Badh Samela village in Darbhanga from where in last 5 months more than a dozen Muslim youths have been picked in various unsolved terror cases. From his own village, three youths have been arrested.
