Citing the local Dogan news agency, Xinhua said the 35-year-old tourist — whose identity was not disclosed — was kidnapped Saturday by members of the party while he was travelling from the northeastern city of Trabzon to southeastern Diyarbakir province.

The hostage was freed and was being brought to Diyarbakir, said provincial governor Mustafa Toprak.

The Kurdish Workers Party, listed as a terrorist organisation by Turkey, the US and the European Union, took up arms in 1984 to create an ethnic homeland in southeastern Turkey. Since then, over 40,000 people have been killed in conflicts involving the group.
