Handique to head OBC committee

New Delhi : Lok Sabha member Bijoy Krishna Handique will head the newly- created Parliamentary Joint Committee on Welfare of Other Backward Classes, an official statement said Tuesday.

The committee will consider the reports of the National Commission for Backward Classes and report to parliament on the measures that should be taken by the government for the welfare of the other backward classes (OBCs).

Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar appointed Handique as the new chairman of the 30-member panel.

A motion to constitute the panel was adopted by the House Dec 21 during the winter session last year.

The committee’s term would be one year from the date of its first sitting.
