Asked about the presidential candidate, Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari repeated the comment he has made on several previous occasions, that the press would be informed when “talks fructify into some conclusion”.

“As soon as the process fructifies into something concrete or conclusive, we will keep you informed,” Tewari said.

He, however, strongly refuted any difference among UPA constituents over supporting the candidate.

“Repeatedly over the past eight years, whenever there has been a political challenge, this question has repeatedly popped up with regard to the cohesiveness of the unity of the UPA,” Tewari said.

“We have repeatedly demonstrated that UPA is unified and cohesive,” he said, adding that the unity will reflect in the result this time as well.

UPA ally Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has been called for a meeting with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi Wednesday on the issue of presidential election.

Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, whose party supports the UPA government from the outside, will also be meeting Sonia Gandhi Wednesday.

The Trinamool Congress, the second largest constituent in the Congress-led UPA, is yet to spell out its support for the Congress in the presidential election.

The Election Commission Tuesday announced the schedule for the presidential election.
